Buying your first hot tub is an exciting time, however it also comes with the responsibility of maintaining proper water chemistry so that your tub stays clean and safe. A clean and well-balanced hot tub will not only enhance your soaking experience, but also ensure your tub lasts as long as possible!
There’s a number of different chemicals you will need to keep your hot tub clear of contaminants, keep reading to find out what they are…
1. Sanitisers
Sanitisers will be the foundation of any hot tub’s care routine. They kill harmful bacteria, pathogens and viruses that could contaminate your water. The two most common sanitisers for hot tubs are chlorine and bromine.
Chlorine sanitisers can sometimes cause strong odors and be harsh on the skin if not properly balanced. Plus, they can degrade faster in high temperatures, so regular monitoring is needed. Bromine is a good alternative as it tends to be less pungent and harsh on the skin and also remains stable at high temperatures.
2. pH Balancers
Maintaining the right pH level is crucial for your hot tub. If the pH is too low or too high, it can irritate the skin and eyes, damage your hot tub’s components and reduce the effectiveness of your sanitising chemicals. This can result in scaling, corrosion and elevated levels of bacteria growth.
Ideally, you should try to maintain a neutral pH level between 7.2 and 7.6 to ensure a safe and comfortable bathing experience. If your water’s pH is too low (below 7.0), you will need a pH increaser, if your water’s pH is too high (above 7.6), you will need a pH reducer. To check your tub’s pH level, all you need to do is take a test strip, dip it into the water and wait 15 seconds to see what your levels are so you can treat the water accordingly.
3. Shock Treatments
Organic contaminants like body oils and lotions can build up in your hot tub over time. By shocking your hot tub, you can break these contaminants down and eliminate any odors for a cleaner soaking experience.
Non-Chlorine shock is a popular option as it doesn’t introduce more chlorine into the water. Plus, it’s perfect for regular use and doesn’t require you to wait long before using the hot tub again. Chlorine shock treatments are more powerful and best to be used after heavy use or if the water appears cloudy or dirty.
