is a hot tub noisy

If you're thinking about purchasing a hot tub, you may be concerned whether hot tubs make noise when in (or out) of use. Hot tubs do make a small amount of noise, similar to anything that requires electricity to run. But, do not let this stop you from purchasing a hot tub!

How noisy is a hot tub?

On average, your hot tub will generate 41-67dB of noise. To put it into perspective, this noise range is equivalent to a whisper and goes up to the sound of the average conversation.

Whilst this level of noise is usually nothing to worry about, it's important to remember that noises can seem louder at night when sound travels further. Due to this, you may want to keep an ear out for your hot tub's noise levels to ensure that it doesn't bother your neighbours.

Obviously, this depends on your neighbours, the placement of your hot tub and the features of your specific hot tub. Some of the hot tub features that have an effect on noise level include:

  • The brand
  • The hot tub's level of insulation
  • The power rating
  • The settings you use for your hot tub

Does a hot tub make noise when not in use?

When a hot tub isn't in use, there is no reason for it to make any noise! This is actually used as a very popular selling point for hot tub purchases.

You will only have to worry about your hot tub making noise when you are using it. There are many parts of a hot tub that make noise, such as panel vibrations, the heat pump, the filter etc..

The only exception to this is that your hot tub may generate noise when you have a filter cycle on, which happens a few times a day.

Why do hot tubs make noise?

The Pump

Your hot tub pump will generate a mechanical sound as it helps to circulate water and power your hot tub jet.

Vibrations and Reverberations

Depending on the location of your hot tub, you may find that vibrations and reverberations make some noise. For example, if your hot tub is on a wooden deck, you may find that this noise is amplified through the wood.

Poor Insulation

Cheap hot tubs have less internal sound insulation around the hot tub's jets and pipes. If your hot tub has poor insulation, you may find that it is louder than average.

The Filter Cycle

A filter cycle usually takes place a few times each day. It most frequently runs overnight, but this can generate a more noise which can be emphasised at night when it is quiet.

How can I make my hot tub quieter?

Think about where you'd like to place your hot tub: if you place your hot tub by a window or on a wooden deck, you should expect more noise than usual.

Buy sound insulation for your hot tub: you can purchase spray foams to quieten loud, internal features of your hot tub.

Invest in a hot tub cover: when you buy a hot tub cover, you can minimise the noise it makes by creating a direct sound barrier.

Create a barrier for your neighbours: if you've exhausted all other options, try to create a physical barrier between the hot tub and your neighbours by enclosing your hot tub behind a reinforced fence, divider or some thick bushes/plants. This means that the barrier is more likely to absorb the sound of your tub instead of going straight into your neighbour's garden!
