Insulated hot tub with thermal top cover

SHORT ANSWER: Yes, hot tub insulation is essential if you want to keep your energy bills to a minimum.

Keeping running costs low is almost always a key priority for hot tub owners. There are several factors that can impact the overall cost of using a hot tub, but one of the biggest contributors is energy consumption.

To keep the water at the right temperature, your hot tub uses a heating system which runs off your electricity supply. Using this heater very frequently can become quite expensive, which is why top-quality hot tubs tend to come fully insulated.

Why is hot tub insulation important?

A well-insulated hot tub keeps the water hot for longer, requiring less work from your heater and saving you money on your energy bill.

Insulation is an absolute must if you want to run your hot tub as economically as possible. In some cases, it can take up to 5 times longer to heat up a hot tub without proper insulation!

Fortunately, all the hot tubs we stock here at Premier Hot Tubs feature multiple layers of insulation, making it easier for your tub’s heater to achieve and maintain the desired water temperature.

What insulation do hot tubs need?

There are five important insulation types:

1. Polyurethane insulation

This method involves spraying the entire outside of the hot tub (the shell) with high-density polyurethane insulation foam. This reduces the time it takes for the water temperature to pass from the body of water to the outside environment. It increases the overall strength of the tub, too!

2. Thermal wrap

Thermal-layered insulation is wrapped around the shell of the tub to reflect the heat. Don’t worry, though; this won’t disrupt your access to the spa.

The thermal layer enables your hot tub to maintain a high R-value (a measure of thermal resistance).

3. Aluminium foil insulation

The composite wood cabinet is fitted with aluminium foil insulation all the way around the inside. Adding this layer reduces the thermal losses to the sides of your spa significantly.

4. ABS base

The hot tub’s thick ABS (acrylonitrile butadiene styrene) base ensures that no moisture can penetrate the hot tub from below, minimising heat loss.

5. Thermal top cover

The majority of temperature losses will occur closest to the surface of the water, so if you want to keep your energy bills low, it’s important to trap this heat in. That’s where thermal top covers come in very handy.

For optimum energy efficiency, you might also want to invest in an insulated spa bag cover. This adds a further layer of insulation to prevent heat from escaping. They also protect your hot tub from the elements, such as UV, Wind, rain and snow.
