hot tub on patio

One of the most frequently-asked questions about hot tubs is whether they need plumbing. We’re here to bust this myth wide open once and for all.

No, a hot tub does not need plumbing! In fact, all the plumbing of a hot tub is internal, and does not need to be connected to your home.

All you need to do is fill the hot tub up with a hose, and drain it when necessary. It might be that your tub has a special drainage valve at the bottom for letting the water out, but if not, or if you can’t access it, a submersible pump should work just as well.

How do I install a hot tub?

You may not need new plumbing for your hot tub, but if you have purchased a hot tub with a 13-amp standard plug, you just need to ensure the socket into which it’s being plugged is about two metres away from the tub. Otherwise, preparing the electrics will require a professional electrician. Here at Premier Hot Tubs, we will deliver the hot tub to you and take it to your pre-prepared site. Then it’s up to you to get it ready for use - see our Delivery & Installation Guide for details.

One important thing to remember is that hot tubs are not like IKEA furniture: you do not build your own. A lot of them come pre-assembled, so you’ll need to make sure it’s as easy as possible to move the tub into the space you’ve set aside for it.

If you’re keeping your hot tub outside, you’ll need to make sure it has a stable base. This could be made up of paving slabs, a concrete pad, or even special high density plastic hot tub pads, but one thing you should never do is put your hot tub on grass. They are a lot heavier than they look, so if you place it directly on grass, it may sink into the earth. It will also soak up moisture from the ground, which could easily lead to rotting.

However, if you want to install your hot tub underground, indoors, or set it into decking, this will create a lot more work. There may be special drainage needed, and structural support will be required. An indoor hot tub will also come with ventilation considerations, while any tubs outside will have to be kept free of debris and dirt from the outdoors.
