Empty hot tub

Enjoy your spa for years to come by keeping it in tip-top shape with the help of our handy hot tub maintenance checklist.

There are certain things you ought to be doing every time you use your hot tub, while other maintenance tasks should be carried out on a weekly, monthly or quarterly schedule. We've divided up our maintenance checklist as follows:

1) Every time you use the hot tub

2) 2 – 3 times per week

3) Once a week

4) Once a fortnight

5) Once a month

6) Once a quarter

7) Once a year

Every time you use the hot tub

Shower before entering your hot tub. Moisturisers, perfumes and make-up can contaminate the water and damage the hot tub’s components, so make sure your skin is clean before you get in.

Rinse your swimwear beforehand. As with your skin, you want to make sure your swimsuit—your second skin—is free of contaminants. That includes any soapy residue that might be left over from the laundry. Give your bathing costume a rinse in plain water before sinking into your hot tub.

Switch your tub over to the economy and sleep modes when not in use. This protects the hot tub and lowers the running costs.

2 – 3 times per week

It’s wise to perform these checks every day if you’ve only just started using your hot tub (or if your usage increases), but you can drop down to a few times a week once you’re in the swing of things.

Check your sanitiser level. You don’t want bacteria getting a foothold and damaging your hot tub. Check your sanitation levels using our hot tub test strips and, if necessary, treat with your choice of bromine or chlorine sanitisers.

Check your pH level. Your water needs to be kept at a pH of 7.2 to 7.4 to avoid damaging your hot tub fixtures and fittings. You can test this with a simple pH test strip. If pH levels are above or below the ideal level, treat accordingly with our hot tub pH balancers.

Once a week

Shock your hot tub. Shocking is a non-chlorine treatment that prevents the build-up of algae and microorganisms, and reduces the need for draining and refilling your hot tub by keeping the water sparkling. Our non-chlorine shock granules will do all the work for you. See How to Shock a Hot Tub for guidance.

Check water levels. Once or (ideally) twice weekly, ensure that the water level hasn’t dropped too low. Water levels should sit halfway up the hot tub’s filter grill.

Cover maintenance. To keep your hot tub cover in good condition, wash weekly with Cover Protect & Shine.

Once a fortnight

Check and clean the filters. For peak performance, you want to keep your hot tub filters clean and clear. A blast of Instant Filter Spray Cleaner will degrease your filters fast.

Once a month

Overnight filter soak. Remove the filters and give them a thorough soak overnight in a specialised cleaner, such as Yourspa Cartridge Cleaner. It’s a good idea to keep two sets of filters on hand so you can rotate them—while one set is soaking, the other can be working away in your hot tub.

Once a quarter

Drain your hot tub. Before draining your tub, give it a deep clean with hot tub flush to wash away any oily build-up. Then drain the water and treat the shell to a cleanse with a suitable surface cleaner before refilling.

Once a year

Annual servicing. Regular professional maintenance will keep your hot tub running smoothly and reliably long-term. Check out what we offer in terms of hot tub service options.
