hot tub test strips

Keeping your hot tub clean and working normally is super important if you want to continue enjoying your spa for many years to come. A key aspect of hot tub maintenance is checking the sanitiser, pH and total alkalinity levels on a regular basis.

This might all sound very technical and scientific, but don’t panic - fortunately there are hot tub test strips that can do most of the work for us.

How do water test strips work?

Hot tub water test strips will change colour depending on the sanitiser, pH and alkaline levels in your tub water. You will then be able to compare the colour of the test strip to a colour chart provided with the test pack. Then, if required, you can adjust these levels so your hot tub is safe to use.

How to use hot tub test strips

Hot tub test strips are super easy to use, but if you’re unsure, follow the step-by-step guide below:

  • Step 1: Before testing your hot tub water, make sure that it is completely still and there are no bubbles.

  • Step 2: Remove a test strip from the pack, making sure that you don’t touch any of the colour pads with your fingers.

  • Step 3: Dip the test strip into the water, about 30cm deep, and remove immediately (max 5 seconds).

  • Step 4: Hold the test strip level for 15 seconds, again making sure not to touch the colour pads.

  • Step 5: Compare the sanitiser (chlorine and bromine) pads, then the pH and alkalinity pads with the colour chart.

  • Step 6: Depending on the results of the test strip, you might need to adjust the sanitiser, pH or alkalinity levels of the water before use.

How often should I test my hot tub water?

As with most hot tub maintenance routines, the more you use your hot tub, the more often you’ll need to check and potentially adjust the chemical levels in the water.

We recommend testing your sanitiser, pH and alkaline levels daily to ensure safe hot tub use. However, if you don’t use it every day, you should be fine as long as you test your hot tub water before each use.

Regardless of your hot tub usage, try to check the water at least twice a week.
