One of the biggest benefits of hot tubs is that they can be used all year round! Come rain or shine, summer or winter, hot tubs are a great space for spending time with loved ones, or relaxing after a long day!

Whilst hot tubs can be great fun in the summer, the heat of the hot tub combined with the summer sun (when we’re lucky enough to have it in the UK) can cause you to get dehydrated pretty quickly, so here are a few tips to help you enjoy your hot tub safely in the summer months...

1) Take regular breaks

As much fun as a hot tub can be, it’s incredibly important to take breaks from time to time to avoid over-heating. This is particularly important if you have young children using your hot tub! If you need to, set timers for every 20 minutes or so to remind yourself to take a break. You may not want to, but it will keep your temperature regulated.

2) Keep water on hand

Being submerged in the water can be pretty deceptive, and you can find yourself dehydrated and overheating faster than you might think. Keep a water bottle near by and take sips regularly, even if you’re not always feeling thirsty. Ensure those around you are also staying hydrated!

3) Drink in moderation

It’s summer, you’ve got friends around, you’ve had a few drinks - obviously the next step is to get in the hot tub! Whilst using your hot tub as a social space can be fantastic fun, it’s important to be aware that alcohol can lower your self-awareness, meaning you might not always be aware of just how much the heat is affecting you. Alcohol is inherently dehydrating, so combining that with the summer heat and a hot tub is the perfect recipe for a heat meltdown disaster!

The effects of alcohol can be felt more strongly in a hot tub – remember, if at any point you start to feel nauseous, dizzy, faint, confused, etc, get out and drink some water immediately.

4) Stay in the shade

If possible, keep your hot tub positioned in the shade. The combination of being sat in direct sunlight while relaxing in the hot water can quickly lead to you getting far too hot. So, staying shaded – whether that’s by trees, a gazebo, garden umbrella, or a veranda, is for the best! Not only will this help to stop you from overheating, but it will also help protect your exposed skin from harmful UV rays!
