rubber duck in a hot tub - how much chlorine should i put in my hot tub?

The best way to enjoy your hot tub is to enjoy it safely! When using a hot tub or spa, it’s essential to use chemicals such as chlorine to sanitise your water.

Chlorine is one of the most popular chemicals used for hot tub sanitisation – it’s fast acting, cost-effective and it's a powerful disinfectant that kills bacteria and other harmful organisms that can grow in water. But the question is,  how much chlorine should you use in your hot tub?

How much chlorine should I use in my hot tub?

If you're looking for the short answer, the ideal level of chlorine in a hot tub is 3-5 ppm.

One of the features that makes chlorine so popular is that it is relatively PH neutral, making it ideal for shock-dosing on initial set-up with fresh water, or when the hot tub hasn’t been used for a long period of time.

When measuring how much chlorine you need for your hot tub, the unit of measurement typically used is “parts per million”, or ppm. The ideal level of chlorine in a hot tub is between 3 and 5 ppm.

What happens when you don’t use chlorine?

Using chlorine to sanitise your hot tub water is necessary for a number of reasons. If you don’t sanitise your hot tub water it can quickly become infested with harmful bacteria – the symptoms of this include the hot tub water turning green and/or cloudy. Not only can this be damaging to the people using the hot tub, but it can also cause damage and erosion to the hot tub parts.

If you were to insist on using your hot tub without any sanitation chemicals, it would be necessary to drain and refill the hot tub after every use, which is very time consuming and expensive in the long run, considering the amount of water it takes to fill a hot tub!

On the flip side, if you use too much chlorine you may experience side effects such as eye, skin, and lung irritation, brittle hair, and a change in hair colour. This is why it's so important to get it right!
